Agriculture Series

As a child, the best time of my life was visiting my grandparents’ farm.  The essence of the natural world was imprinted in my soul.

Fifteen years ago, while traveling across the U.S., I began photographing grain elevators.  A couple of years ago while in California, I found myself photographing irrigation equipment.  Also in California, I was at an organic farm when the workers came out of the rows of raspberries.  At that moment, I made a connection with the personal level of where our food comes from.

Growing up in Michigan, I was surrounded by plentiful water and took it for granted.  Now, living in the Southwest, I see the fragility of nature and the effects that the lack of water has on the landscape.

Mannequin Series

I first photographed mannequins in Detroit in the early 1990’s.  Then, in the spring of 2015, I discovered a collection of mannequins in Tulsa, OK, reigniting my interest in them.  Later that year, I traveled to New York City to photograph at mannequin companies in the Fashion District and at a Brooklyn warehouse.

No matter what I’m photographing, it is important for me to honor my subject.  I’m fascinated by the mannequins’ dramatic presence.  Even the less realistic models have a human-like quality.  The mannequins seem to take on a life of their own.
